Hubble's new Solar Panels arrive at ESTEC

On 18 October 2000, Hubble Space Telescope's new solar array arrives in The Netherlands aboard a United States Air Force transport plane. The C-5 cargo plane, carrying two trucks loaded with the array and associated test equipment, left the U.S. from Andrews Air Force Base and landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

Mr. H. G. Thoma, ESA Transportation and Storage Officer, stands on Schipol tarmac with Mr. Tom Griffin, NASA's Observatory Manager for Hubble Space Telescope. Behind them is the U.S. Air Force C-5 plane containing Hubble's solar wing and supporting test equipment.

After rolling off the C-5 cargo plane in Schipol, the trucks are escorted in a convoy to ESA's facility in Noordwijk for testing.

Cocooned in its protective crating, Hubble's solar array is safely rolled into the airlock at ESTEC.

Hubble engineers and technicians begin unbagging the solar array's mast. ESA provided the control mechanism for this arm-like mast.
