After-dinner talk
Professor Cees D. Andriesse, the biographer of Christiaan Huygens, will provide the birthday lecture:
"Titan Cannot Sleep", giving highlights from the biography “Titan kan niet slapen”.
Cees Andriesse, born in Leeuwarden in 1939, studied physics and astrophysics and specialised in energy conversions. In 1989 he became a professor at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Utrecht, initially on an endowed chair in Electricity Supply and since 1994 as ordinary professor in Energy Physics.
At the moment Cees Andriesse is associated with the research programme ‘History and Foundations of Science’. This is one of the programmes of the Research Institute of Physics and Astronomy that cover a broad spectrum of present-day research in physics and astronomy and include a variety of interdisciplinary activities. The reputation of the Faculty in teaching and research contributes strongly to attracting students in physical sciences. A sizeable fraction of graduate students is foreign. The Julius School, the teaching institute of the Faculty, offers several challenging and exciting two-year international Master Programmes. Three thorough and outstanding programmes cover the traditional fields associated with Physics and Astronomy as well as interdisciplinary subject areas. Furthermore the Julius School offers a unique programme at the interface of the Humanities and Science: Master in History and Philosophy of Science. For further information: www.phys.uu.nl.
The University of Utrecht has been kind enough to make the English version of this biography available at such a price that we can offer one copy to each registered participant free of charge, in exchange for the coupon that is contained in the conference bag.
Further copies can be directly purchased from the Physics and Astronomy department of the University of Utrecht. For details contact: S.Meesters@phys.uu.nl
VISITS TO LOCAL MUSEUMS
At four locations in the ESTEC region, special attention is being paid to Christiaan Huygens in the form of exhibitions, open from 8 April until 31 May 2004, collectively entitled:
Christiaan Huygens, Facets of a Genius
These exhibitions take place at:
- Museum Boerhaave in Leiden
- University Library in Leiden
- Huygensmuseum Hofwijck in Voorburg
- Space Expo in Noordwijk
A flyer describing the exhibitions, with maps of the locations, is included in the conference bag.
A ticket for admission to the four museums, together with a copy of the associated booklet ‘Christiaan Huygens, Facets of a Genius’, is provided to all registered participants in the conference bag.
On Thursday 16 April, three tours to the museums are being offered:
1. ESTEC - Hofwijck - Boerhaave
2. ESTEC - Boerhaave - University Library
3. ESTEC - University Library - Boerhaave
The transfer between Museum Boerhaave and the University Library will be a walk (with guide) of about 15 minutes through the centre of Leiden.
Due to the limited capacity of Huygensmuseum Hofwijck, Tour 1 is restricted to 50 persons. Due to the limited time available it will not be possible for all participants to visit all museums this Thursday afternoon. Therefore interested participants are encouraged to subscribe quickly at the conference desk and will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
Space Expo is not included in these tours since all participants have the opportunity to visit it during the conference dinner.
Buses will leave ESTEC on Thursday 16 April at 16:00.
The visits to the museums are expected to end at about 19:30. Since all tours end in Leiden, you are encouraged to enjoy the local atmosphere in the centre of the city, have dinner, and return at your leisure to Noordwijk with one of the public buses, numbers 40 or 42, that leave from the central railway station. Timetables for these buses are available at the conference desk.
