AS A NEW APPROACH TO COMMUNICATE THE CURRENT UNDERSTANDING OF SOLAR SCIENCE AS REVEALED BY ESA'S SOLAR FLEET (SOHO, ULYSSES AND CLUSTER), ESA AND ART RACE IN SPACE HAVE INITIATED THE PROCESS OF UPDATING SOLAR ICONOGRAPHY.
AN ICON IS A HIGHLY RECOGNISABLE AND EASILY REMEMBERED IMAGE, BUT ONE THAT AT FIRST ENCOUNTER DOESN'T DEMAND COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF ALL ITS LAYERS OF COMMUNICATION. AN ICON HAS STAYING POWER AND ALLOWS FUTURE INFORMATION PULSES TO BE ABSORBED MORE READILY.
IN THIS BODY OF WORK WE SOUGHT TO EXAMINE THE ESSENCE OF THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE SOLAR FLEET GENERATES. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO COMMUNICATE THE MOMENTOUS CONCEPTS OF CONTEMPORARY SOLAR SCIENCE TO A BROAD PUBLIC THAT OFTEN HAS NO NOTION THAT THE SUN IS A BURNING BALL OF PLASMA? OUR EXPERIENCE OF THE SUN IS FAR AWAY FROM OUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SUN. ART RACE IN SPACE DECIDED THAT A STRATEGY FOR UPDATING THE SOLAR ICONOGRAPHY WOULD BE TO MAKE AN INFORMATION VACCINE; INFUSE THE IMAGES OF THE SUN AS REVEALED BY THE SOLAR FLEET WITH LESS MEANING AND MORE PERSONAL SIGNIFICANCE.

THE WORKS IN THIS EXHIBIT DISPROPORTIONATELY USE IMAGERY FROM THE SOHO MISSION. RATHER THAN TO UNDERVALUE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ULYSSES AND CLUSTER MISSIONS, ART RACE IN SPACE WISHES THE SOHO MISSION A HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY.
